On the heels of a gold medal performance by the women's team, and an appearance by that team Friday night at Banker's Life Fieldhouse, gymnastics is about to get a lot more love from the Circle City.
USA Gymnastics announced Friday that the home city of its headquarters will host the national championships in 2015, the fourth time the competition has been held in Indy, and the first since 2005. The championships will help determine the team that will compete at that year's World Championships.
"Our community has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with USA Gymnastics, which has called Indianapolis home since 1983," said Allison Melangton, president of Indiana Sports Corporation. It's the latest major sports event to come to Indy on the heels of this year's Super Bowl, which Melangton oversaw as head of the Host Committee. She is also a former executive with USA Gymnastics.
Legendary gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi and his wife, Marta, were also on hand for the announcement. Marta Karolyi is currently the national team coordinator for USA Gymnastics, while Bela has coached numerous world champions and Olympics medalists, including Nadia Comฤneci, Mary Lou Retton and Kerri Strug.
Karolyi says one of his favorite moments in the sport took place in Indy when one of his students, Kim Zmeskal, won the all-around world championship at the RCA Dome in 1991, the first U.S. woman to win a world all-around title. "I love Indiana, I love Indianapoils, and I would definitely say there is no better place for our governing body that right here in Indianapolis," said Karolyi.
During the U-S Championships, Indianapolis will also host the annual USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show, which holds demonstrations and seminars that are open to anyone interested in gymnastics.
