The State School Board meeting could feature a showdown between the state school superintendent and his successor.

The board is expected Wednesday to consider new rules on teachers, specifically how those teachers earn a certification or a license. Glenda Ritz, who defeated State superintendent Tony Bennett in last month's election, opposes the change that would allow teachers to be certified without having a degree in education.

Naturally, schools of education at universities oppose the change, too, but Bennett has been supportive of opening up the teaching field to those who can pass a demanding Content Area Exam.

Other supporters say it will help bring new talent into the teaching field that had previously been shut out.
