Be Careful at Your Office's Holiday Party

Ready for the annual holiday party at your office?  There are a few things both employees and business owners should remember.

Barbara Quandt, State Director for the National Federation of Independent Business, says states vary on their liability laws regarding holiday office parties but it's best to just use common sense. She says business owners need to make sure the party is voluntary and also hire professional bartenders and instruct them not to serve anyone who appears intoxicated.

Quandt adds owners can have trusted managers be on the lookout for intoxicated employees.  She says it's best to make sure employees have a safe way of getting home whether it's a designated driver or a taxi.

Quandt says employees and business owners need to remember that harassment lawsuits can also arise from voluntary company events held outside the office.  She says all businesses should have harassment policies in place and owners should remind employees of those policies before the party.
