Indiana Counties Involved in Childhood Obesity Study

Two Indiana counties are involved in a five-year Purdue Extension study looking at the causes and preventions of childhood obesity among rural preschool students.

Purdue Extension Heatlh and Human Services Education for Adams County, Nancy Manuel, says one reason Adams County was chosen due to them  having a strong health coalition.  Manuel says they've sent out several surveys, including one out to the Head Start program in Decature. Thirty sets of parents were surveyed mostly about the environment of their kids, but as well as the physical aspect of their daily routines.

Manuel says the University of Connecticut will compile the surveys, and they should have results after the first of the year. Counties in Kansas, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin were also chosen. The study will end in March 2016.
