Can Certain Foods Help Fight the Cold and Flu?
With the flu affecting many people across the country, some people may be going to certain foods to try and fight it off.
Anna King, a registered dietician with IU Health Methodist Hospital, says nothing has been scientifically proven to help fight cold and flu symptoms aside from medication but she says it can't hurt to increase your vitamin and mineral intake with fresh fruits and vegetables. King says some people start to follow a proper diet when they start to get sick. She says if people have a proper diet with increased fruits and vegetables, there's a better chance of not getting sick in the first place.
King says it's important stay hydrated when you're sick, not only with orange juice which people tend to flock to, but more importantly with lots of water. She says when it comes to dairy products, the effects vary from person to person. King says when some people have a lot of mucus, consuming dairy products may hinder a person's ability to reduce mucus but with other people, dairy products may not have an effect at all.
King says the best way to boost your immune system is to eat a healthy and balanced diet.
