Officer Accidentally Shoots Gun in East Side Home
An IMPD officer called to a disturbance in an east side home Tuesday accidentally fired a gun into the floor of the home. IMPD reports 30-year old Michelle Frougere called police after her intoxicated father threatened to shoot someone.
IMPD Officer Dominic Smith went to the home at 6833 East 34th Street and found four televisions on the floor with bullet holes, as well as broken glass leading into the garage. Officer Smith spoke with 58-year old John Fougere, who admitted to drinking two bottles of wine and handling several loaded weapons. Fougere stated he wanted to speak with his daughter about paying bills but became agitated when she wouldn't listen to him and retrieved several guns from his bedroom.
Officer Smith went to the room and found the empty bottles of wine, a jug of urine that Fougere admitted was his, along with the guns. Officer Smith secured a shotgun and cleared two live rounds Fougere said were in the gun, but as the officer lowered the weapon it fired once into the floor of the home. Fougere told the officer he wasn't upset with the hole in the floor, but "the landlord would be pissed".
Officer Smith reported the shooting and confiscated the guns. Police were also called back to the home later in the night.
