Saturday begins a weekend of events leading up to Mike Pence's inauguration as governor on Monday.
Listen:
The governor-elect assigned incoming First Lady Karen Pence to plan the weekend festivities. It kicks off at 11 a.m. with a family event at the Dallara IndyCar factory in Speedway, with bands, a coloring contest, face painting -- and IU's game against Minnesota on TV, for those who can't bear to miss it.
Just as Governor Daniels did, the Pence inaugural committee is sponsoring a massive Sunday worship service the day before the inauguration. Former Colts punter Hunter Smith's gospel band and Christian contemporary singers Keith and Kristyn Getty will perform.
The swearing-in of the new governor, Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann and Attorney General Greg Zoeller will take place on the statehouse steps on Monday. Karen Pence says the inaugural committee will have hot-drink stations and distribute hand warmers in anticipation of temperatures in the 30s.
The Pences will attend a sold-out inaugural ball Saturday night at Indy's JW Marriott. That's the only one of the weekend's events that requires paid admission, though Karen Pence says planners are asking people to register online if they plan to attend any of the other events. The First Lady says her husband will hold his own on the ballroom dance floor -- she says he's always an in-demand dance partner at family weddings.
