Officials with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) are working to reopen the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 and eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 in downtown Indianapolis after an oversized vehicle struck the Virginia Avenue bridge Friday afternoon.
INDOT's Will Wingfield says the vehicle was traveling on northbound I-65 and struck a steel bridge beam. He says designers are developing plans to repair the bridge beam and hope to have design plans completed by midday Saturday. He says they'll have a better idea at that time when the lanes could be reopened.
Northbound I-65 remains closed at the south split. The eastbound lanes of I-70 are also closed at the same location. Northbound traffic is being diverted onto westbound I-70. Eastbound traffic is being diverted onto southbound I-65.
Wingfield says all vehicles over 13.5 feet in height are requried to have a permit from the Indiana Department of Revenue. He says that helps to give the drivers certain routes to avoid this type of situation.
Wingfield says it's not known if the vehicle in this incident had a permit.
