One person was shot at the Shoe Carnival store on Lafayette Road around 9:30 p.m. Friday.
Police said a male tried to steal a pair of shoes from the store but was caught and detained by the store's security workers.
The employees detained the suspect by handcuffing him to a chair in the back of the store then they called police, officers said.
"At some point, there were two employees in the back, and there was some commotion. The suspect is heard saying, 'I have a gun,' and then a 'boom' is heard," said Metro police spokesman Kendale Adams.
One employee was shot and taken to the hospital in serious condition, police said.
Adams said the suspect -- still handcuffed to the chair -- tried to flee the store through the front door, but it was locked.
In the meantime, employees flagged down a nearby off-duty officer. The officer and a K-9 chased the suspect behind the Wal-Mart, where the suspect was caught, police said.
The suspect was taken to Wishard Hospital with minor injuries caused by the K-9.
Police have not released any information about the identity of the victim or the suspect.
