Mass Transit Bill Passes House

2/25/2013

The mass transit bill is moving on to the State Senate. The House voted 56-39 in favor of the bill that would expand mass transit in Marion and Hamilton Counties. Other counties are elibigle, including Boone, Delaware, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Morgan and Shelby.

The bill would require an income tax increase, but only after a referendum. Rep. Jerry Torr (R-Carmel) says the bill focuses on bus transportation initially. He says rail service could come, but it would be 5 to 10 years down the road.

Rep. Ed Delaney (D-Indianapolis) says the bill is a jobs bill on two levels. Delaney says the bill would allow people to get to their jobs, and will also create jobs in the buildout phase.

The bill now moves on to the State Senate, where it is expected to receive much more scrutiny.
