Charlie White: Attorney Carl Brizzi Ignorant of the Law

Former Secretary of State Charlie White is asking a judge to reduce his prison sentence for voter fraud, blaming attorney Carl Brizzi for torpedoing his defense.

White was forced to give up his office after he was convicted in February 2012 of six felony charges. He said he lived at his ex-wife's house and registered to vote at that address, but prosecutors said he actually lived with his now wife at a Fishers condo, which was outside his Fishers town council district.

In a request for post-conviction relief filed Thursday, White, who was sentenced to one year on home detention, claims he received ineffective counsel from Brizzi, specifically that "Brizzi failed to present a defense" and that "Brizzi was ignorant of the law."

The former Marion County prosecutor came under fire after he failed to call any defense witnesses in White's case.

In the filing, White also argues that other politicians have not lived in areas they claimed while running, including former senators Birch and Evan Bayh, Gov. Mike Pence, former Gov. Mitch Daniels, Sen. Dan Coats, former Vice President Dick Cheney and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

White maintains that those politicians were allowed to remain on the ballot and claim their home address while not "living" there, but that he is going to prison for doing the same.
