Two Indiana Airport Towers On Sequester List
Two Indiana airport towers are on the Federal Aviation Administration's list of 149 federal contract towers slated to close soon.
The FAA says it's part of the federal sequester plan. The Columbus Municipal Airport and Gary/Chicago International Airport towers are on that list. They're part of the plan to meet upwards of $637 million in cuts. The FAA originally proposed closing 189 air traffic control towers.
However, it removed dozens from the list to avoid a so-called, negative impact on the national interest. The FAA says the closures will come in phase-outs that begin April 7th. Officials say some communities are choosing to assume the cost of continuing air traffic control services.
