Man Steals, Crashes Ambulance in Anderson
An Anderson man faces several charges for allegedly stealing an ambulance and crashing into several cars.
Anderson Detective Joel Sandefur says Joseph Sandlin, 27, was arrested early Friday morning after crashing into five vehicles on Main Street. He is charged with theft, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, and for never being licensed. Sandefur says Sandlin was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for domestic battery.
Anderson Fire medics were on a call at 4am, taking care of a patient, when Sandlin allegedly jumped into the unattended ambulance and drove it to Main Street where he hit the five parked vehicles. Police found Sandlin sitting in the driver's seat. He admitted to taking Hydrocodone, other pills, and bath salts. When officers asked Sandlin why he stole the ambulance, he told them he wanted to crash the ambulance into a police car so police officers would shoot him.
