Bill to Shield Hunting Preserves Goes to House Floor

4/1/2013

Five Indiana hunting preserves could get a trump card in a long-running battle with the Department of Natural Resources.

A House committee has approved a proposal to let the preserves continue operating, while banning any similar hunting operations from opening.

Several environmental and hunting groups have criticized the fenced-in preserves as "canned hunting," and the D-N-R has been embroiled in a court fight for eight years trying to shut them down. Representative Matt Ubelhor (R-Bloomfield) says the preserves have done nothing wrong -- he says banning them would not only put them out of business, but cripple the business of dozens of breeders who supply the preserves with deer and other animals.

The proposal still needs to clear both the full House and the Senate.
