Apartment Fire Leaves 26 Homeless

26 people were displaced from their homes by a two-alarm apartment fire on the city's west side early Wednesday.

Just after 4 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to the Stratford Apartments in the 5100 block of Hillsboro Drive near 34th Street and Georgetown Road on reports of a fire alarm.

Dispatchers said as Indianapolis Fire Department crews worked to gain control of the blaze, all firefighters were ordered out of the building because of the intensity of the flames. Crews then began using a defensive attack, officials said.

Nearly two hours later, crews finally gained control of the fire.

Investigators estimated that the fire caused $250,000 in damages.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
