State Officials Stressing Motorcycle Safety

There are more than 200,000 registered motorcyclists in Indiana.

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute says the number of motorcycle road fatalities is on the rise while other vehicle fatalities are dropping. That's why ICJI's Traffic Safety Director says Ryan Klitzsch says they're kicking off another Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month in Indiana. Klitzsch says they're hosting numerous events like the one on Monument Circle in Indianapolis Tuesday to spread the word about safety.

Indiana doesn't have a helmet law. However, Klitzsch says studies show that wearing helmets increase chances for surviving dangerous crashes by up to 33%. He adds motorists should always be on the lookout for bikers. He says they're harder to see than other vehicles.
