IUPUI Says STEM Graduate Effort Paying Off

5/6/2013

IUPUI says its efforts to boost the number of science, technology, engineering and math students are paying off.

Listen:

Officials say the total number of STEM graduates rose by 25 percent during the past three years. IUPUI School of Science Spokesperson David Hosick says a $2 million National Science Foundation grant helped the university create programs designed to attract and prepare college-bound high school students.

Hosick says they focused on peer mentoring in areas where students are known to struggle, a streamlined process to transfer STEM students from Ivy Tech and increasing faculty participation and support. Hosick says in 2008, 417 IUPUI students graduated with STEM degrees. Three years later, that number stood at 524.

Hosick says the graduates are crucial given Indiana's increasing presence in the life sciences sector. IUPUI plans an official presentation that will include Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard Tuesday afternoon.
