It's the month of May and in Indiana that means only one thing: racing.
Motorsports industry leaders gathered at Chip Ganassi Racing on Indy's northwest side to discuss the impact the industry has on the state. Hulman and Co. CEO Mark Miles says 23,000 hoosiers are employed in the industry, with a typical salary over $60,000. Indiana Motorsports Association Executive Director Tom Weisenbach says the industry now works with colleges and universities to steer students to the industry. Weisenbach says they need engineers, technology jobs, and data acquistion, which he says is an area of growth over the past decade.
Chip Ganassi says when he started as a driver in the early '80's teams needed six mechanics and one engineer to operate a car, but now he says that has grown to nine mechanics and four engineers per car. Over 90 Indiana companies sold themselves to 30,000 visitors of the International Motorsports Industry Show in Indianapolis last year.
