Indiana Inching Closer To New Area Code
Indiana is a step closer to getting a new area code.
The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor is recommending that the state approve a new "overlay" area code for southern and south-central Indiana. IOUCC Spokesman Anthony Swinger says the recommendation comes as the state is running out of numbers in the 812 area code. Swinger says any new area code still needs the approval of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.
The IURC is still considering options for a new area code. The overlay option would allow existing customers within any locality to retain their numbers while new customers in the area would be assigned to a new area code. The IURC is expected to make a final decision by the end of this year. Shortly after that, the new area code would be phased in.
