Marion County Fair Opens, With First Signs of New Look

The Marion County Fair begins its nine-day run Friday, with the beginnings of a new look as well.
The southside fairground is a year into a planned five-year renovation. There's still the usual schedule of musical performances, but the old Concert Stage has been demolished. Fair board president Cathy Clark says the stage was isolated from the rest of the fair, and demolishing it opens up the front of the fairground.
Performers from the Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra to the Wray Brothers will instead perform on the new Citizens Energy Group Park Stage.
Clark says further renovations will go hand-in-hand with the fairground's goal of becoming a year-round facility. The current 4-H building will turn into a multipurpose building with meeting space for nonprofit groups.
The fair is also doing repair work on gutters, plumbing and wiring.
