The victim in Thursday night's fatal shooting in downtown Indianapolis has been identified as 16-year-old Monquize Edwards.
Edwards was shot in the midst of a large crowd of young people in a location where police have long struggled to control unruly and sometimes violent teenagers. It was not immediately clear what prompted this most recent incident.
Mayor Greg Ballard issued a statement Friday saying, “It is unfortunate the actions of a few juveniles spoiled an otherwise peaceful celebration of our nation’s independence by tens of thousands of people in downtown Indianapolis. I extend my deepest sympathies to the family of Monquize Edwards. As the events of last night show us, the administration, public safety, faith-based groups and other community partners need to redouble our efforts to confront the problem of unsupervised youth roaming free downtown and the parents who allow it.”
Investigators are asking for calls to 262-TIPS.
