Southwest Central Indiana Eyeing Economic Future

A group of Southwest Central Indiana counties is drafting a strategic plan for the future.

Lilly Endowment has awarded a $650,000 planning grant to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development's Economic Growth Region 8. Steering Committee Chairman Dan Peterson says the region includes: Brown, Crawford, Daviess, Dubois, Greene, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Orange, Owen and Washington counties. Peterson says the funding will go toward helping the counties combine efforts to boost their presence in the life sciences, the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) field and the hospitality and entertainment fields among other industries.

Peterson says the region also has other assets including Crane Naval Base and the new I-69 corridor between Evansville and Indianapolis that can be used to help maximize future economic development. Peterson says they'll soon begin to study concrete measures that can be taken and will have a final plan of action in place in about a year.
