The Indiana State Fair opens today at the State Fairgrounds.
This year is the "Year of Popcorn." Gates open at 8 a.m. and opening ceremonies get underway at 8:30 this morning. We spent some time asking setup crews what it's like gearing up for the fair. Don Shaw runs the Merry-Go-Round and says it's a lot of work. Shaw says the Merry-Go-Round has 370 pieces that are hand-assembled. However, he says they set it up in one day's time.
Brooke Wireman of Hot Wisconsin Cheese says cooler temperatures made this year's setup much easier than last year when temperatures crept into the 90s. She says she always looks forward to working with new colleagues.
Shriner John Crook says the Murat Shrine Tent serves up whitefish and catfish among other dishes to raise money. Crook says setting up and running the food tent at the fair is a lot of work, but for a worthy cause.
The Fair runs through Sunday, August 18th.
