An Indianapolis firefighter is in critical condition after battling a house fire on the city's near east side early Friday morning.
IFD says Private Chris McGrone lost his mask in a cloud of smoke while battling the fire and suffered smoke inhalation. He was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital and was upgraded to critical condition upon arrival.
McGrone was put into a medically-induced coma and officials say he will possibly remain so for three to five days. Doctors are monitoring his airway conditions due to the smoke inhalation.
Metro Police say the fire occurred at a "pea-shake" gambling house. The house was a duplex in the 1500 block of Columbia Avenue and investigators believe the fire was the work of an arsonist.
