One Dozen Homes For One-Dollar In Gary
The city of Gary is running a real estate fire sale: one dozen homes for one-dollar each. The catch: the new homeowners must provide a little "sweat equity."
Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson says several hundred people picked up applications on the first day they became available... but 25 people are actually interested in the one dozen homes on the "dollar home" list.
Successful applicants must be Gary residents because Freeman-Wilson wants to recognize and reward those who've stayed in Gary rather than move to other nearby towns and cities. They must also show proof that they can fix up and maintain the home.
The pilot program is in Gary's University Park neighborhood, but plans call to expand it to more homes across the city.
