One man is dead after an explosion Monday at Grace Community Church in Noblesville.
It could be weeks before we know why it happened, but Noblesville Police Lt. Bruce Barnes says it was a gas grill that exploded, killing 52-year-old Doug Gripp of Carmel.
"There were other people that were around based upon the information that's being told to us," Barnes says. "It was large enough to be heard; to be felt by people in the immediate area. Nobody else was injured as a result of the incident."
Dave Rodriguez, Senior Pastor at Grace Community Church, says Gripp was a "beloved" volunteer who setting up for a large event at the church which was to be held Monday night. The event was canceled after the explosion.
"We are in the process of caring for the volunteer's family, loved ones and the Men of Grace community. This is a heartbreaking time for all of us. Let’s unite together and pray for God’s presence and comfort for all those involved," Rodriguez said in a statement on the church's Facebook page.
Rodriguez says the church will be open Tuesday for people to grieve and pray.
