Gary Asking for Help to Demolish Abandoned Buildings
A city filled with an overwhelming number of abandoned structures could see hope of demolition if state help arrives.
Lake County Sheriff John Buncich wrote a letter to Governor Mike Pence asking for Indiana Corps of Engineers personnel to demolish hundreds of abandoned structures in Gary. Buncich says the vacant properties are being used for illicit gang and drug activity and are a danger to residents within the neighborhoods where the properties are located.
Estimates are that there are nearly 10,000 abandoned homes. Buncich says he has been in meetings with the Governor's staff for several weeks discussing ways to help Gary's crime problem, but he has not heard back from Pence's officer since he penned the letter.
