South Split: Crews to Begin Work on Bridge Beam Replacement

As the South Split construction project continues, contractors will begin work this week on the Virginia Avenue bridges over I-65/I-70.

INDOT says contractors will be replacing two steel beams on the bridges starting Monday.  The sidewalk on the north side of the street will be closed for this portion of the project and those traveling on the Indianapolis Cultural Trail on the south side of the street will see restrictions in width.

The removal and replacement of the steel beams is expected to last less than two weeks.  The work is necessary because of repeated strikes to the beams from oversized loads.  In February, a crash fractured one of the beams in two locations, causing a weekend-long closure of the interstate for repairs.

Meanwhile, INDOT says contractors are on or ahead of schedule for the entire South Split project.  INDOT is offering the contractors incentives of $60,000 for every day they finish ahead of the 59-day schedule.
