Bicyclist Critically Injured After Being Struck by Vehicle

IMPD: Driver taken into custody

IMPD is investigating an accident which left a bicyclist in critical condition Wednesday night.

Officers were called to East 38th Street just east of Hawthorne Lane around 9:30 p.m. on a report that a pedestrian had been struck.  Officers found 25-year-old Luke Alberts of Indianapolis lying on the ground.  He was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses tell police a white Ford vehicle struck Alberts has he was riding his bicycle with the flow of traffic on East 38th Street in the curb lane.  The vehicle, driven by 24-year-old Kenneth Chowning of Indianapolis, continued driving until it collided with a parked vehicle near East 36th Street and Alsace Drive.

Chowning was taken into custody but has not been arrested.  Police say he is likely to face preliminary charges once the on-scene investigation is complete.  Chowning is suspected of consuming alcohol or another illegal intoxicant.
