Overturned Semi Closes I-70

11/5/2013

A wrecked semi ended up completely blocking the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 Tuesday afternoon, causing major traffic backup and drawing crews to the scene. Officials said a state police trooper was somehow involved.

Indiana Department of Transportation cameras show a semi crashed sometime between 2 and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, sending the semi tractor-trailer across the interstate and blocking the eastbound lanes of I-70 near Emerson Avenue.

Investigators said the semi (driven by a 67-year-old man) was traveling east on I-70 in the left lane when it hit a wall and then an ISP cruiser. They say it's possible the driver had a medical condition that contributed to the crash.

Indiana State Police (ISP) confirmed that two troopers were involved in the wreck. Officials said both of them were sent to IU Methodist Hospital, but their injuries are not believed to be serious. SkyCam 6 images show the semi somehow ended up on its side, with the front of the truck partly covering the trooper's ISP vehicle.

The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) said the driver of the semi was taken to IU Methodist Hospital in good condition to be checked out.
