First Lady Karen Pence has established a foundation to help arts groups and organizations for families and children.

The First Lady's Foundation will hold an annual luncheon modeled on the Washington event which began a century ago with William Howard Taft's wife Helen. It'll raise money for a single recipient, starting in April with the art therapy program at Riley Hospital for Children. It'll also award 500-to-1000-dollar microgrants to call attention to programs around the state.

Pence says she set up the foundation after being flooded with requests to help different groups. She'll sit on a four-person foundation board which will review 500-words-or-less applications submitted through the foundation's website.

Pence says the foundation will be separate from the work of her husband's administration. She says invitations to the luncheon will go to the spouses of all 150 legislators, the five Supreme Court justices, and state officeholders, with corporate sponsorships filling the rest of the crowd.
