Indianapolis' First Lady Winnie Ballard is leading the local effort for Philippines typhoon relief.
Mrs. Ballard is the wife of Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and is of Filipino descent. Ballard says she was stunned by reports of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). Thousands of people lost their lives in the typhoon. Ballard is urging Hoosiers to join in relief efforts by donating money online to the American Red Cross, United Way of UN World Food Programme.
The Pacers Foundation has already donated $50,000. American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis CEO John Lyter says the international Red Cross has already committed $95 million to the effort and the national American Red Cross has pledged $6 million.
