Bizarre Three-Car Crash Kills Bartholomew County Man
A tragic accident resulted in the death of a Bartholomew County man and the hospitalization of his family member.
Maj. Todd Noblitt with the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department says that just after noon on Thursday, a van driven by 30-year-old Roger Haywood, of Hope, was headed east near the 9000 block of 25th Street when his vehicle was struck by a westbound Lowes delivery truck, driven by 25-year-old Timothy Dill, Jr.. According to investigators, Dill's truck had been struck by a third vehicle, a truck and trailer that had stopped on scales just off of the roadway at a business located at 9040 East 25th Street.
For unknown reasons, the truck and trailer, driven by 36-year-old David Eckerle, of North Vernon, began rolling toward the roadway. Investigators say that Eckerle stepped out of the vehicle, noticed it rolling towards traffic and chased it in an effort to stop it. He was unsuccessful. The truck and trailer ultimately entered traffic and caused the crash and fatality.
Haywood was pronounced dead at the scene by Bartholomew County Coroner Larry Fisher. Haywood's passenger, 28-year-old Stephanie Haywood, was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital with unknown injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
The accident caused 25th Street between State Road 9 and Bonnell Road to be closed for more than four hours.
