Hazmat crews were called to the CSX rail yard in Avon Thursday on a report of a possible chemical leak.
Avon EMS Division Chief Jerry Bessler says they got a call from the rail yard in the 400 block of South County Road 800 East about a possible spill of vinyl chloride which is used to make PVC plastic and vinyl products. Bessler says two rail yard workers were walking the line and noticed an odor at which time they decided to back away from the area.
Two teams were sent to inspect the area and no active leaks were found. Bessler says no one was in danger and there were no evacuations.
The investigation was turned back over to CSX who has called in its own mitigation team to conduct a physical inspection.
