Woman Thwarts Kidnapping by Phony Cop

An Indianapolis woman reported to police that a man dressed like a police officer tried to kidnap her as she was walking on the west side Friday morning.

The woman, 43, told officers she was walking along West 16th Street near Lafayette Road around 6 in the morning when a small gray four-door car approached her.

She said a man stepped out wearing a dark blue shirt and pants, similar to a police officer’s uniform, and his belt seemed to have a radio clipped to it.

The victim said the man told her to get into his car, but she refused.

Officers wrote in their report that the man then told the woman he was a police officer and he asked for the victim’s name.

The woman told the man her name and she said he again told her to get into his car, but she again refused and took off running.

Police said the woman did not see a badge or a gun during the attempted kidnapping.

She said the suspect’s car appeared to be newer but she never saw a license tag.  She said the man seemed to be about 30 years old, but police had no other leads on the case.

The woman was not hurt.
