For many years, February has been Black History Month.
Dr. Bessie House-Soremekun is the public scholar for African-American Studies at IUPUI. She says Black History Month came from a movement to acknowledge the contributions of African-Americans on U.S. history that had been written out of the history books.
Dr. House-Soremekun says although black history is more main stream than it used to be, it is still relevant as reminder to African-Americans of their great heritage as well as a symbol of America's diversity.
Dr. House-Soremekun is working on a book that highlights the business contributions of certain African-Americans in the Midwest. Madame C.J. Walker is included in the book as a self-made millionairess who made her fortune developing, selling and franchising hair care products all over the world.
