Newsroom personnel at the Indianapolis Star are included in the latest round of cuts by parent company Gannett. They're among 37 employees laid off here this week, according to the Indianapolis Star Media Group.
Dennis Ryerson, the Star's editor and vice president, says cuts reduced newsroom management by about one-fourth. He says newsroom functions will be re-evaluated in coming weeks.
Ryerson says the newsroom will continue to focus on certain core areas, including watchdog journalism, economic and business reporting and sports reporting.
The Star's publisher and president, Michael Kane, told the employees in a memo that the company is also cutting costs by reducing zoned pages, consolidating some operations and reconfiguring the statewide circulation operation.
