Pregnant Women at Greater Risk with H1N1 Virus

Six percent of the deaths from the H1N1 flu virus in the U.S. have been pregnant women.

The Centers for Disease Control has tracked the incidents of pregnant women with the H1N1 flu virus from April through June. Of the 34 confirmed cases, six have died.

Dr. David Haas, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology with the IU School of Medicine, says because the immune system of pregnant women is diminished, the virus is much worse for them.

Haas urges a pregnant woman who has a fever and flu-like symptoms to see their health care provider as soon as possible. He also recommends pregnant women get both the seasonal flu vaccination as well as the H1N1 flu vaccine when it becomes available this fall.
