Cop Charged in Fatal DUI Arraigned

Bisard to learn trial date late next month

David Bisard (IMPD photo)The IMPD officer charged with driving drunk in a fatal crash will learn his trial date late next month.

David Bisard made his first court appearance on felony DUI charges carrying up to 20 years in prison. Marion Superior Judge Grant Hawkins scheduled a hearing on any pending motions for September 23, and a pretrial conference for September 28.

Prosecutors have asked that Bisard's license be suspended and that he be ordered to undergo evaluation for a possible substance abuse problem. Both steps are routine in a DUI case.

Bisard did not speak in or out of court, beyond the required yes/no responses to questions from the judge. Attorney John Kautzman also declined comment beyond a promise to investigate all aspects of the case thoroughly.

Investigators say Bisard's blood alcohol level tested at more than double the legal limit, two hours after he slammed into a group of motorcyclists, killing one and critically injuring two.
