A former Indianapolis resident won the people's choice in the Monument Circle Idea Competition. The competition was created to find out how to redesign Monument Circle.
Greg Meckstroth's design, titled "Square One: A Monument Circle Vision," won Meckstroth 1,000 dollars after being chosen by the public out of 12 candidates. Julia Watson with Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. described Meckstroth's design to 93 WIBC's Ed Wenck on Indy's Afternoon News.
"He really recognized that the existing place of Monument Circle, what it needed was an increased vitality and greenspace and more active first floor dining and storefronts to improve the pedestrian experience," Watson said.
Meckstroth now lives in Pennsylania where he works for a design firm. 64 ideas from designers around the world were entered into the competition. A team of French designers took home the First Place prize.
Now, all 64 entries in the competition will be narrowed down to three by a scoping team which will pick three designs to send in a report to the Indianapolis Department of Public Works this fall.
