Indiana Senator Richard Lugar speaks out on the debt ceiling issue as talks resume this weekend on whether to raise the debt ceiling.

 

Lugar tells 93 WIBC's Amber Stearns on Indy's Afternoon News House Speaker John Boehner was optimistic after speaking with President Obama, saying there's a 50-50 chance of a very large deal. Lugar says the American public wants to make sure that the country doesn't default on its debt.

"It's imperative we get the debt ceiling problem solved and it's very important we have our own budget problem as they move more toward a balanced budget and very clear definition of spending cuts in the years ahead," Lugar says.

 

Lugar says he does not think tax rate hikes are a good thing and adds that business confidence in this country rely upon the country's ability to borrow money and pay its debts.
