W. Lafayette to Mask Sewage Smell During Food Fest
West Lafayette officials have bought a device they hope will mask the stench from the city's wastewater treatment plant during Saturday's Taste of Tippecanoe festival.
The festival takes place along the Wabash River, not far from the plant.
Wastewater treatment utility director David Henderson says the $1,700 machine consists of a large fan that blows a vanilla-scented odor. He also plans to add odor-control chemicals to the treatment plant's lagoon.
Taste of Tippecanoe festival director Scott Freeman says he understands the utility is doing everything it can to reduce foul smells.
Henderson says the odor has been noticeable because equipment used to break down solid waste is being renovated.
