Beyonce, Miley Cyrus Among 2014 MTV VMA Winners

(Inglewood, CA) -- The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards is delivering on another year of surprises from the biggest names in music. This year's award show, which took place Sunday night at the Forum in Inglewood, California, was split between some somber and some wild moments. Beyonce stole the show with her closing performance accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. She was in tears after performing her chart-topping surprise self-titled album in full. Husband Jay Z appeared on stage with their baby Blue Ivy in his arms to hand her the coveted Moonman. The Queen Bey broke down at the sight of her family in a rare emotional moment. Miley Cyrus was in tears, as well. With the memory of her 2013 performance with Robin Thicke still fresh in the minds of many, the singer brought a very different kind of surprise when she allowed a young homeless man to accept the award for Video of the Year on her behalf. She stood nearby with tears streaming down her face, as the young man spoke of his lost dreams of being in show business and encouraged viewers to give back.

Rapper Common was on hand to present the award for Best Hip-Hip Video, and took the opportunity speak about the situation in Ferguson, Missouri. The jam-packed stadium fell quiet when he asked for a moment of silence to remember Michael Brown, the unarmed teenager who was shot and killed by a police officer there earlier this month. MTV also gave a short photo tribute to the late Robin Williams. The VMAs started with some more lighthearted moments, however. Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Jessie J kicked off the show, performing individually first then coming together for their new collaboration "Bang Bang." Nicki had a wardrobe malfunction that had her holding her dress together on stage after her gyrating-heavy "Anaconda" performance. Other performers included Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Five Seconds of Summer and Iggy Azalea. Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry, Lorde and Fifth Harmony all took home awards as well.
