Veteran British Actor, Director Sir Richard Attenborough Dead At 90

(London) -- Sir Richard Attenborough, the Oscar winning director and producer of "Gandhi," has died at the age of 90. Attenborough's son told the BBC the veteran British director and actor passed away Sunday. He had been in a nursing home with his wife actress Sheila Sim for several years after suffering a fall that left him in a wheelchair six years ago. Known for moving dramas on war, pacifism and apartheid, Attenborough spent decades working as a character actor before winning the Best Director Oscar in 1982 for "Gandhi," starring Oscar winner Ben Kingsley in the title role. His movie "Cry Freedom,"starring Denzel Washington as anti-apartheid leader Steve Biko , also won critical acclaim five years later in 1987. "Oh What A Lovely War," "A Chorus Line" and "Chaplin," which starred Robert Downey, Jr., are also among this directing credits.

Attenborough also delivered a number of memorable supporting roles as an actor. He earned back-to-back Golden Globes in 1966 and 1967 for "The Sand Pebbles" and "Doctor Dolittle." He also played eccentric developer John Hammond in Steven Spielberg's 1993 blockbuster "Jurassic Park" and Kris Kringle in a 1994 remake of "Miracle on 34th Street." Attenborough's six decade career also included his breakthrough role in the 1947 movie "Brighton Rock" in which he played a psychopathic gangster. "The Great Escape" and a theatrical run in Agatha Christie's "Mousetrap" in London's West End are also among his numerous credits. Attenborough was knighted in 1976.
