Stopped by police with a gun in the car - now what?

Guy Relford is joined by former Indiana State Trooper Tami Watson and IMPD attorney and instructor Mike Daley on "The Gun Guy Show"

With more and more Hoosiers buying guns and obtaining a License to Carry Handgun, police are encountering an increased number of citizens who are legally carrying firearms in public -- including drivers who have a gun in the car during a traffic stop. These encounters have the potential to end tragically if a misunderstanding arises - and Constitutional rights are involved.  For this reason, it is critically important for both police and members of the public to know how to react if an officer pulls over a car and the driver is armed.

Unlike many states, there is no legal obligation in Indiana for a driver to inform a police officer that the person is armed or that there is a gun in the car during a traffic stop.  However, it may be smart to do so - depending on the circumstances.

On Saturday, "The Gun Guy," Guy Relford, was joined by former Indiana State Trooper Tami Watson, now of the Watson-Chambers Defense Institute in Columbus, and IMPD attorney and instructor Mike Daley to discuss the best way for both citizens and police officers to conduct themselves when a person is stopped by the police while in possession of a gun.

Guy and his guests also discussed the legal issues involved when police are called to investigate a person who is simply carrying a gun in public.  A podcast of the full show can be heard here (just scroll down to the show for September 17, 2016).

The Gun Guy with Guy Relford airs every Saturday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
