Maliki Resigns As Iraq's Prime Minister

(Baghdad) -- Iraq's embattled prime minister is leaving office. Nouri al-Maliki announced in a televised speech Thursday that he is resigning and giving his support to new prime minister Haider al-Abadi. Meanwhile, a U.S. official says the militant Islamist group known as ISIS is a "credible alternative to al-Qaeda" and is expanding its influence in the Middle East. The anonymous official, who has direct knowledge of the latest intelligence on ISIS, says the group is recruiting more fighters since the spring and its takeover of Mosul in northern Iraq.
