KABUL  --  Vice President Mike Pence is visiting troops in Afghanistan.

Pence made an unannounced visit to the Bagram Airfield military base, where he wished American troops a happy holidays and thanked them for their service.

In a speech, the vice president said "President Donald Trump is the best friend the armed forces of the United States will ever have."  He plugged a recent pay increase for troops, adding that "yesterday, we cut your taxes."

Pence reflected on the start of the war in Afghanistan following 9/11 and said "we are staying in that fight and will see it through until the end."

In August, President Trump unveiled a new Afghan strategy that he said would be based on "conditions on the ground," instead of "arbitrary timetables."
