FRENCH LICK, Ind.--A plane crash Saturday night in Orange County killed one person, said Indiana State Police. Sgt. Dave Henderson said the crash happened at the French Lick airport.

The name of the person killed was not given out to the public Monday, when state police released info about the crash. The family had not been notified.

“Around 9:10 p.m. the Orange County dispatch center received several calls that a plane had possibly crashed at the French Lick airport,” said Sgt. Dave Henderson, the state police public information officer for the Jasper district. “We sent numerous units from all local law enforcement agencies and fire departments to the French Lick airport.”

He said they found a single-engine plane had crashed. When law enforcement and first responders arrived, the plane was on fire.

“At this time we know that there was one person deceased in the plane.”

Henderson said the Federal Aviation Administration was there Sunday and had also been there Monday to determine the cause of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board also investigates plane crashes.

“Once their report’s made public, it will be released,” he said. That could take several months.

Henderson said state police do an initial investigation before handing it over to the FAA.

“We also stay with the plane and secure it until the FAA arrives,” he said.
