10 People Injured in Boating Accident on Lake Gage

The boat's driver was drunk and took a turn too fast, sending everyone overboard. The boat "ran away" unmanned, driving in circles and crashing into a dock.

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. -- A  boat spinning out of control with no one at the wheel -- that's what conservation officers say happened Saturday after a drunk driver lost control on Lake Gage in Steuben County.

All 10 people onboard were thrown into Lake Gage, including the driver. Four of the boaters were seriously injured, including one person who lost part of an arm and another who suffered a fractured skull.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources say the 21-foot boat continued on, driverless, at more than 30 mph. It spun out of control, crashed into a dock, and then ran into the boat of Conservation Officer Jake Carlisle. Carlisle was eventually able to climb aboard the runaway boat and stop it before it could inflict more damage.

The boat's driver, 20-year-old Dominique Effinger, was arrested by conservation officers for Boating While Intoxicated Causing and Injury and being a Minor in Possession of Alcohol.
