27 Overdoses in 24 Hours: One Block of Downtown Indy Rocked with Drug Issues

The overdoses have all come from an area near East Market and Delaware. At least one person is on life support, says RTV6.

INDIANAPOLIS -- 27 overdoses in just 24 hours: Indianapolis police and EMS have had a busy day in the area of just one block in downtown Indianapolis.

Since Wednesday, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services have responded to multiple overdoses involving 27 people from the area surrounding the 500 block of E. Market Street.

IEMS said they have transported people from the area nearby the Wheeler Men's Mission homeless shelter. Steve Kerr, director of development for Wheeler Mission, said 15 of those overdoses were registered residents of the Wheeler Mission and several of the overdoses occurred inside the shelter.

At least one of the overdose victims remains on life support, Kerr said.

Call 6 sources familiar with the investigation say detectives are currently tracking a bad strain of drugs in the area.

Sources say they believe it might be a tainted batch of a synthetic drug.
